Leo Full Moon 2026

Leonine Noblesse Oblige being conferred to humanity

The Leo full Moon is exact at 13°03’ on Sunday, February 1, at 4:09 pm CST. The Leo Moon is not only opposite the Sun in Aquarius at 13°03’, but also opposite four other planets in Aquarius: Pluto at 03°43’, Mars at 07°27’, Venus at 19°20’ and Mercury at 21°06’. This configuration calls to mind one of my favorite analogies of the Leo/Aquarius polarity, that of Leo as the frontperson and Aquarius as the band. The five planets in Aquarius are acting as the band, and the Leo full Moon is acting as the frontperson; the Leo frontperson is shining their light and warmth out for all to glory in, with full support and backing from the creative tension inherent in the opposition to the band, the five planets in Aquarius. Neither of these facets of performance and creative tension - the band and the frontperson - could thrive without the other, and in fact they work together to enhance and enable one another. True, the frontperson often gets the most attention (and scrutiny), but they are part of a larger cohesive, inextricable creative unit.

On that note (har har), I learned a new word recently, while reading the fabulous book Our Moon by Rebecca Boyle, and that word is SYNESTIA. Synestia is a word that planetary scientist Sarah Stewart and her student Simon Lock created to describe their theory of the Moon’s creation. I won’t spoil the theory by going into the details, but the word synestia is taken from the Greek, the prefix syn meaning “together”, along with the Greek goddess Hestia, the goddess of hearth and home; so synestia means “our home, together”. (p. 27)

This idea of synestia correlates seamlessly with this Leo full Moon, as I like to describe the energy of Leo in the context of the goddess Hestia, and the hearth fire of home. The hearth fire is something that needs to be consistently tended and stoked, and as a result of being properly tended, keeps all inhabitants of the home warm, safe, and illuminated, with access to warm food and drink. If the hearth fire isn’t tended properly, it goes cold and ashy, leaving all inhabitants chilly, endangered, in darkness, and without access to warm food or drink. The energy of Leo is like this hearth fire: if given proper attention, appreciation and response, it will radiate out to all, giving the life force freely for all to bask in, originating from this inner warmth and light of the hearth fire within.

Sadly, Leo is often vilified in pop astrology as vain, diva energy that requires constant attention, OR ELSE. But guess what? We all have Leo somewhere in our natal charts, and we are all susceptible to the spectrum of expression of these energies somewhere in our lives. And ALL signs have their more shadowy/less life-affirming expressions, it just seems that certain ones are singled out for their less sustainable expressions more often in pop astrology. I imagine that once a Leo’s warmth and light that was once so freely and readily given is withdrawn, it is a lack that is not easily forgotten or assimilated, hence the more frequent vilification. We can liken it to an extended power outage in the depths of winter - what once made life more tolerable, even easier and more pleasant (and was taken for granted as an ever-present given), is sorely missed when it is gone, and even adds an insufferable, exponential feel to winter’s challenges.

Back to the frontperson/band analogy for the Leo/Aquarius polarity; the first real concert I ever went to was in the early 1990s - Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was amazing, I was absolutely transported! Except for Smashing Pumpkins - Billy Corgan had some type of emotional meltdown on stage, and they essentially didn’t even really perform much of their set. So not only did the frontperson negatively impact his own experience, but also that of his entire band, the audience, and most importantly, my young opinion of Smashing Pumpkins - I never once gave them a chance after that performance (much to the disappointment of my guitar-playing husband, who greatly appreciates Corgan’s mad skillz.) On the flip side, I was instantly fully enamored with Pearl Jam, who opened the show. So much so, I later came perilously close to getting a tattoo of the stick figure guy from the Alive EP; to this day I thank my teenage lucky stars that I went with the artwork from a Babes in Toyland album instead. PHEW!

So if we consider the frontperson in this scenario as the Leo archetype, and his band as the Aquarius archetype, because of the frontperson’s inability to shine their warmth and light, the entire band suffered and their performance fell apart. A quick look at Billy Corgan’s natal chart shows that Leo falls mostly in his 11th house of groups. Maybe he was feeling unappreciated by his band that day? We’ll never know.

Looking again at the Leo/Aquarius polarity, it’s not only expressed as frontperson/band. The Leo energy is that of individual creativity and uniqueness, while the Aquarius energy is “of the people”, with the idea that nobody is special, because everybody is special.

So at this Leo full Moon, ask yourself: how can you shine your unique and creative light and warmth out into the world, knowing that your are fully supported and enabled by the creative tension inherent in your band of humans present in your life and community? Keeping in mind that in turn, by shining your creative warmth and light out into the world, you are sharing your life force with humanity, helping them to feel warm, safe, and illuminated.

Since at the full Moon we typically think of it as an excellent time to release what no longer serves us,  what is being illuminated for you at this full Moon that wants to be released? Specifically, what do you need to release so that you are better able to shine your unique, creative light and warmth out into the world, with the aim of sharing your life force with humanity, helping them to feel warm, safe, and illuminated?

When releasing during the full Moon, I like to make it a thing. It doesn’t have to be exactly at the time of the full Moon, it can be any time in the day or night leading up to it, which is typically what I prefer, but do what you are able. If you miss the night before, do it the night of or even the day or night after, as long as the Moon still appears full in the sky, I think the symbology is there for you to work with. Take some time and create a sacred space for yourself and whoever else would like to make it a thing with you. This doesn’t have to be elaborate. Simply sitting quietly and focusing on your breath with lightly closed eyes and spine as erect as possible, or focusing on the sounds in your environment and intentionally taking this moment to connect with yourself and with the nurturing energy of the Moon, which I like to think of as our Cosmic Mother. If you have a meditative practice, feel free to incorporate that into your full Moon practice, but let the Moon guide you, don’t get too far into your solar self of Doing, but allow yourself to simply exist in your lunar self of Being. If you like to really get into your ritual practice, please do make it as elaborate as you wish. At the end of my full Moon practice, I like to make a list of what I’m releasing. I simply write “I release:” at the top of a piece of paper, and then I write down everything that came up during my quiet time with myself. And then I burn that mofo! Safely and mindfully into my little metal cauldron - let’s not set our selves or homes alight please. It really is very freeing to watch the smoke from the burning list curl up into the ethers. Some folks like to incorporate the water element by tossing the cooled ashes into a body of water afterwards, but I’m happy to scatter them to the winds, figuring they’ll make it to water someday. COOLED ashes, mind you, ok? And there, just like that you have made some space for your higher Self to lead you on to your highest and best expression of yourself. I’m a big proponent of gratitude, so I like to give thanks at the end of my practice, so give thanks to whatever Deity you feel is guiding you. If you are PTSD from CCD or whatever other childhood teachings were foisted upon you, and don’t like the thought of Deities, simply give thanks to yourself for making this time to connect with yourself and give thanks to the Universe for coexisting with you.

Because as my yoga teacher Jaki Nett likes to say that everything comes back to yoga, we’ll tie this practice into yoga philosophy, wherein which one of the eight limbs of yoga are the Niyamas. The Niyamas are virtues or individual disciplines which calm the disturbed mind. One of these five Niyamas is known as Isvara Pranidhana, or “surrender to the Divine of all our actions”. In surrendering, we allow for the Divine to work its own magic, co-creating with us. If you’d like to work with the Zodiacal houses, and aren’t sure which house this Full Moon falls in your chart, feel free to reach out to me for that information.
