Virgo New Moon 2026

The Ogo Elegba (dance staff for Elegba/Eshu) embodies the volatile, mediating force of Elegba or Eshu - the Yoruba trickster god. The two faces - one youthful and the other elderly - simultaneously evoke Eshu’s reputation for mischief, unpredictability, and transformative wisdom.

The upcoming Virgo new Moon at 18°25’ Virgo takes place on Thursday, September 10 at 10:27 pm CST, and this lunation marks the official end of eclipse season - phew! Though we’ll likely be slowly integrating whatever came up for us during this eclipse season for the next 6 months or so, until the next eclipse season; but the intensity has mercifully lessened considerably.

Before we get into this Virgo new Moon chart, here is one last shameless plug for my upcoming collaboration at Harvest Preserve with Dawn Frary of Folkloracle:

Understanding Your Natal Moon through Astrology and Tarot

As previously mentioned, Dawn and I taught this same class at Press Coffee at the Virgo Lunar Eclipse back in March, and it was a real good time. We’ll be teaching this time during the dark (aka Balsamic) Moon just before the upcoming Virgo new Moon, which I think might be an optimal time for this class.

Demetra George teaches that the time of the dark Moon corresponds with Samhain/Halloween, the depth of the dark season in the Wheel of the Year. It is the final phase of the lunation cycle, the most mysterious, magical, secret time; the time when the Moon goddess has withdrawn to perform her mysteries. This is the time when menstrual bleeding happens, and the goddess pulls back into herself, putting the veil over herself for renewal and regenerative mysteries to occur. If you’ve read The Red Tent (Diamant, Anita. The Red Tent. Picador, 1998), you get the idea. These themes may especially resonate with you if the Moon was in the dark Moon phase at the time of your birth, making your natal lunation phase the Balsamic Dark Moon phase.

As I mentioned last time, many class participants could see their experience of their mothers in their natal Moon, and many could see their own mothering style in their natal Moon, though it’s not all about mothering. Fleshing out the Mother archetype can indeed help us to connect with our natal Moon, and subsequently learn to nourish it. For example, one artist was able to deepen his understanding of the scenes that he is drawn to create through the exploration of his natal Moon. He didn’t even know he was nourishing his Moon by creating these beautiful scenes - you see, it’s not necessary to know astrology to be in the flow of your chart, but it can feel comforting to have that reassurance. If you’re curious to learn about your natal Moon through Astrology and Tarot, I encourage you to register here!

Now back to the Virgo New Moon of 2026. Let’s talk about Virgo - one of my favorite signs! Virgo is a mutable Earth sign, situated seasonally between the Fixed Fire sign of Leo - high Summer - and the Cardinal Air sign of Libra, which marks the beginning of Autumn. All mutable signs are located between a Fixed sign and a Cardinal sign, and in this seasonal relationship, you can start to get the feel of what mutability is all about. For instance, the past week or so has felt like the stifling corn-sweat swelter of Summer here in Iowa, and yet, and yet! There was a promise of drier autumn weather at the very beginning of Virgo season, and there will surely be a crispness to the air once again before Virgo season is through. (Please let it be so!) The changeability of the mutable signs can be reflected in the weather, but also mirrored in the adaptability of the mutable sign significations. Virgo might be my favorite embodiment of this ability to pivot and remain flexible, because they can go from being very buttoned-up and shit-together to free-wheeling and fancy free within the course of a day (if they’ve crunched the data and determined it feasible and beneficial). Sometimes it’s the body that does the data-crunching behind the scenes, and determines that this hard working Virgo-type could benefit from a break from all that hard work and discernment. When this happens, it can result in some type of bodily break-down that can take the Virgo-type out of circulation and put them down for the count, until the body can get back to some healthier state of functionality.

The ruler of Virgo is Mercury - who is after all the trickster - and this ability to pivot can be thought of as a facet of trickster magic. Mercury also rules Gemini (another mutable sign) but the maturation, if you will, of Mercury from Gemini to Virgo is one of discernment. Where Gemini may do an internet search and call it ‘research’, Virgo says, ‘cite your reputable source’, and ‘please remember to include their well-earned credentials in that citation’. Virgo will separate the good information from the bad, the useful information from the harmful, the proven from the theoretical. After all, Virgo’s Zodiacal animal isn’t an animal at all, but a maiden with a wheat stalk - she who separates the wheat from the chaff.

With all Earth signs, there is an attunement to the physical, and of bringing ideas into form or matter - resulting in something you can put your hands on, or sink your teeth into. Virgo is about purification, so this can show up as purification of the body - finding the exercise program, meditation system, nutrition or hydration plan, and lifestyle that works for you in aiding this purification of the body. Inherent in this is the idea of regimen - this purification is less a dramatic three day cleanse, and more a cutting out or adding in those things that your body needs to function most efficiently, thereby creating a ritual or regimen for health. It is more a lasting change of lifestyle, rather than a fad diet, GLP-1 or gym membership that will fade away in time. This same Virgoan principle of purification and efficiency can also occur outside of your body, and somewhere in your environment - for example, finding the most efficient placement of your furniture, or ridding your closets of those things that are of little use.

Let’s dig into the transits occurring in this Virgo new Moon chart

Sun and Moon at 18°25’ Virgo applying to sextile to Mars at 19°45’ Cancer:

This creates an opportunity for us to act on any intentions we may set at the new Moon. Put another way, it could create a type of fire in the belly for us to strive toward implementing actions that can help to bring about any new Moon intentions that we may set.

Virgo-ruler Mercury newly in Libra at 00°46’ activating the small talent triangle - opposite (and also parallel) Neptune at 03°24’ Aries, trine Pluto at 03°20’ Aquarius, and trine Uranus at 05°41’ Gemini:

This could be any type of communication that seems to inch you along your trajectory through this outer planet small talent triangle adventure that we’re all on together. It could be a conversation with one or more interesting persons (my personal preference), or it could be something that you read (my close second - preferably on the printed page - OLD SKOOL), or something you dream, hear, or intuit. Pay attention to the these fleeting occurrences, and note anything that seems to fit into what you’ve been pondering or exploring lately - think of them as little puzzle pieces that seem to help the larger image start to come more clearly into view. Remember that the energy of the small talent triangle is about specialized talents that come about by calmly absorbing experiences into your consciousness, with the aim of gaining knowledge and skills, while growing by remaining adaptable.

Venus newly in Scorpio at 00°31’, opposite Chiron at 00°14’ Taurus, both square Pluto at 03°20’ Aquarius:

This fixed T-square could indicate some type of pressure to dig deep into your values, creativity, relational patterns or financial habits in order to facilitate transformative healing on some level. With Chiron retrograding back through the last wisps of Taurus, it could be healing of the body itself, particularly a part of the body that is susceptible to recurring issues. Or it could be the body that signals the need for an unearthing of these issues to bring them into the light for examination and possibly cleansing - the kind of cleansing that may sting a bit, as the water that irrigates the wound stings.

Jupiter at 15°47’ Leo separating from a trine to Saturn at 13°03’ Aries:

This same trine was an applying trine back at the Pisces full Moon, and was described at that time as a fiery flow of self-expression and ‘go forth and conquer’ energy. Jupiter in Leo seems to ask ‘what is the most creative vision and expression of my most fabulous self?’ With Jupiter’s trine to Saturn in Aries, Saturn seems to answer ‘how can I make this vision of fabulous creative self-expression happen ASAP’? Can you give one last tweak of this energy in your own life at this Virgo new Moon? Perhaps you can get into the details of what this could look like in your life, without the frustration that may have accompanied the Mars square to Saturn, which has now moved on. After all, Mars is now sextiling this Virgo new Moon and Sun, creating the perfect opportunity for bringing something into form - why not have that something be the most creative vision and expression of your most fabulous self?

Uranus stationing Retrograde at 05°41’ Gemini:

The outer planets are retrograde a little less than half the year, so their retrograde cycles seem to have less of an impact than those of the inner planets, who are retrograde less often. However, when outer planets are stationing direct or retrograde, especially in coincidence with a lunation or other impactful transit, this can be a cue to pay attention to this planet. Especially if the station happens to fall within a few degrees of a natal planet, it is as if the developmental energy of the planet is intensified, as the planet is seemingly standing still at that degree point. When a planet stations retrograde, there is an energy of internalization. What, if anything, do you feel may be internalized with regard to the Uranian energy in the house that contains 5°41’ Gemini in your chart? Uranian energy is that of rebellion, freedom, liberation, deconstruction, new beginnings, technology, innovation, defiance of authority and initiation of radical change. Yeah, I can think of a few things I could internalize along those lines, dontchoo?
