Cancer New Moon Intentions Event Registration

Think of it as this blog, but In Real Life. Instead of all of us sitting behind screens, we’ll be discussing the energies present with this Cancer new Moon in a beautiful nature preserve and spiritual sanctuary.

We had a really great discussion at the previous New Moon in Gemini event at Harvest Preserve. I hope that if you’re interested in exploring the current astrology of this new Moon in Cancer in a group of thoughtful, compassionate folks, with the aim of teasing out some intentions that you would like to set for yourself, you will sign up, too! These things are always more fun and meaningful in community and especially In Real Life.

The Cancer New Moon of 2026 occurs on Tuesday, July 14, at 4:43 am CST, at 21°59’ Cancer. This new Moon chart is quite the dynamic chart. Let’s start with the Sun and Moon, who are both conjunct a retrograde Mercury at 19°59’ Cancer. Y’alls , I don’t know about you, but this Mercury retrograde journey through Cancer has got me feeling all the feels! Also, I’ve felt more inwardly contemplative and less outwardly productive; as a result, I’m not sure what kind of objective guide I’ll be in describing the energies of this Cancer New Moon, but here goes nonetheless.

The conjunction of the Sun and retrograde Mercury is referred to as the “inferior conjunction”, and this conjunction is exact on July 12 at 8:25 pm. The term inferior conjunction is not a judgement, it simply indicates the conjunction of Mercury to the Sun while Mercury is in retrograde motion, which always happens when Mercury is in between Earth and the Sun. The “superior conjunction” occurs when Mercury is in direct motion, and the Sun is between Earth and Mercury, or, put another way, Mercury is on the other side of the Sun from Earth. The inferior conjunction of Mercury to the Sun is said to be a seed moment, a “New Mercury” if you will, similar to the New Moon conjunction with the Sun.

What, if anything, have you been reflecting on, revising, reviewing, revisiting, rearranging, reconsidering,  etc. since Mercury went retrograde back on June 29, that you may now be ready to seed in some fashion? Have you been able to intentionally slow down and go back over your style or way of perceiving, thinking and communicating, and to possibly make it more sensitive and tender, especially with yourself? Or perhaps make it more creative or comforting? It seems that both this recent “new” Mercury and the New Moon in Cancer are supporting you in your endeavors if so!

Let’s talk a little bit about Cancer. Cancer is a Cardinal Water sign, and Cancer season heralds the beginning of Summer. All of the Cardinal signs herald one of the four seasons, and all four Cardinal signs share similar characteristics related to this idea of heralding new seasons. Cardinal signs are initiatory, indicative of fresh starts and new beginnings. They are proactive, opportunistic, and like to meet challenges. They have a lot of drive and dynamism, a dislike of restriction, and they like to run things, with a competitive and anti-establishment bent. All of these Cardinal characteristics or significations seem to align fairly harmoniously with the other three Cardinal signs - Aries, Libra, and Capricorn. With Cancer, these Cardinal significations are most definitely still there, but they may not seem as obvious to the casual observer. Cancer is a Water sign, which may contribute to the conundrum of seeing how the flowing sensitivity of water fits with the dynamism (and potential obnoxious bossiness) of Cardinality.

And here is a good place in the discussion to bring in the Zodiacal animal - Cancer the Crab, whose movement is sidling rather than head-on toward their target. It’s still moving toward that target, but not with the overt forward motion of the other Cardinal signs. One word that I really like for Cancer is ambitious. It seems that every Cancer I know not only works full time, but also has tons of really great creative projects that they are involved in. AND they are the most generous and helpful, with energy left over to make family and tribe a priority - it’s impressive, y’all.

Cancer in a snapshot: I returned some borrowed books to a friend who has Sun in Cancer, and returned home with another stack of curated books, a bouquet of fresh flowers from her gorgeous garden, as well as garden produce and homemade refried beans - my absolute favorite and the BEST I’ve ever had.

Many of the Cancer significations can be harkened back to that Zodiacal animal - the Crab. Crabs have hard shells that protect their vulnerable inner soft parts. I especially love the metaphor of the hermit crab, who once they outgrow their shell must cast about, vulnerable with no protective shell, looking for a larger shell to inhabit that they can grow into, and then eventually outgrow, repeating the process. So, too, with Cancer the Zodiac sign, who must leave the protection of their metaphorical shell, and make themselves vulnerable in order to grow, and then once again find protection within that growth. Because crabs have those handy dandy shells, it can become too easy to simply retreat into the shell, especially to avoid conflict. But Cancer can’t stay hidden away in the shell all the time - remember the ambition of Cardinality? That will drive them out of their protective shell, despite their sensitivity and the resulting vulnerability associated with going shelless. There is no true growth without vulnerability for all of us it seems, but maybe especially for Cancer. And lest we forget - we all have Cancer somewhere in our natal chart, whether or not we have any planets or points there; Cancer is representing at least one of the 12 houses (or areas of life) in our natal chart. Crabs also have those impressive claws - a tenacious grip that once it grabs hold, is not wont to let go easily. There is a real tenacity with Cancer - don’t let that Cancerian emotional sensitivity cause you to think otherwise!

“Come at me, bro” The tenacious claw of an Iowa crab (aka crawdad or mudbug), during an attempted home invasion by my dog.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon, associated with the Great Mother, nurturing, home, emotions, family, the past, nostalgia, and a need for a sense of security, including emotional security. With the Great Mother, we have the ultimate act of creation, so it comes as no surprise that many Cancer types are super creative individuals, seamlessly weaving creativity into their daily lives. Also, we have the circle of life that is illustrated by the lunar cycle - birth, growth, decline, and death, followed by rebirth ad infinitum. With the Moon always changing shape, there is an emotional ebb and flow inherent in Cancer energy, one that is best ridden like a surfer catching a tasty wave. When the inevitable wipe-outs happen, just stay calm, resurface, get back on the board, and surf on.

Other transits occurring in this Cancer new Moon chart include:

Jupiter at 03°04’ Leo opposite Pluto in Aquarius at 04°35’, both square to Chiron at 00°40’ Taurus, creating a fixed T-square. This fixed T-square could indicate some type of pressure to dig into your belief systems in order to facilitate transformative healing on some level. With Chiron in Taurus, it could be healing of the body itself, particularly a part of the body that is susceptible to recurring issues.

Jupiter at 03°04’ Leo is activating the small talent triangle formed by the outer planets: opposite Pluto in Aquarius at 04°35’, trine Neptune in Aries at 04°24’, and sextile Uranus in Gemini at 04°20’. This may be Jupiter acting as a catalyst of sorts for the already existing energy of the small talent triangle. Perhaps a vision occurs to you as to what your specialized talent may be shaping itself into? Or perhaps you are able to envision yourself calmly absorbing experiences into your consciousness, with the aim of gaining knowledge and skills, while growing by remaining adaptable?

Venus at 05°11’ Virgo quincunx both Neptune at 04°24’ Aries and Pluto at 04°35’ Aquarius, creating a yod. O yod, how perplexing you are! Each planet is in a different element and modality, leading to a feeling of irritation associated with not fully understanding each other’s expression of planetary energy. The term ‘what even is that?’ applies here. The playbook to engage with the tremendous potential creative energy inherent in a yod is as follows: (Hamaker-Zondag, Karen. The Yod Book: Including a Complete Discussion of Unaspected Planets. Red Wheel Weiser, 2000.)

  • Learn to handle the discrepant, likely irritating energies

  • Accept the unrest in ourselves and the world

  • Remain flexible, even when things go wrong

  • Understand that things going wrong is often a blessing in disguise

  • Be courageous enough to live our own lives, while keeping our minds open

Speaking of courage, the planet of courage, Mars, is in Gemini at 10°09’ sextile Saturn in Aries at 14°37’ at this new Moon. Who doesn’t like a good Mars/Saturn transit opportunity? The dynamic energy is available for us to take action, executing well-planned endeavors, bringing them into physical form - is this not what life is all about, my friends?
