New Moon in Cancer Intentions Registration
The Capricorn full Moon is exact at 08°14’ on Monday, June 29, at 6:56 pm CST. The Moon is opposing the Sun at 08°14’ Cancer, and both the Sun and Moon are separating from a square to Neptune at 04°24’ Aries, and applying to square Saturn in Aries at 14°08’.
Mercury at 26°15’ Cancer is stationing retrograde at the time of this Capricorn full Moon. Mercury entered their shadow at 16°19’ Cancer back on June 12, so this Capricorn full Moon may be shining a light of what we may need to review, redo, reevaluate, rearrange, rewrite, reread, or reconfigure - all of the “re” words. And since the Capricorn full Moon is ruled by Saturn, AND this full Moon happens to be squaring Saturn in Aries, let’s add some Saturn “re” words to our list: restrict, resilience, restraint and resolve.
With just these few Saturn words, we can start to see why Saturn gets a bad rap in pop astrology. These Saturnian ideas are certainly not glamorous (like Neptune can sometimes be), but through the Saturnian themes of mastering time, strategic planning, commitment, accountability, consistency and regular effort, all of the fun can be had, and all of the goals and aims achieved. Saturn is about getting your reps in, or doing the “donkey work” as yoga teacher Geeta Iyengar would say. With Saturn, it is about doing the work, but understand that within this contained Saturnian form can be found a marvelous freedom. Saturn is also a planner, but sometimes can all too easily tip into the realm of doom when it starts to envision All That Could Go Wrong in a situation, or with a plan. I will expose my own problematic Saturnian tendencies with a little story for ya.
Years ago, when I acquired my first puppy as an adult, I had read somewhere that if a dog chews on a stick, a shard of that stick could possibly become lodged in their heart tissue and kill them. So naturally, I tried my best to keep my puppy from chewing on sticks. My boyfriend at the time (a very Jupiterian sort) looked at me running around after my puppy in our very treed and stick-filled yard, and incredulously said something to the effect of ‘What is WRONG with you? Why do you always go to the darkest scenario? He’s a puppy! He’s going to chew on sticks, you can’t stop him.’ And he was right! He snapped me out of my dark Saturnian mania with his imperious incredulity. Was it possible for my new puppy to suffer the consequences of chewing on sticks? Of course! But was it probable? No.
So with this full Moon square to Saturn, try to focus on the useful tools that Saturn affords us, and watch out for the doom and gloom that could cause you to be too restrictive in your behavior or thoughts, out of fear of the possible (but not probable) consequences. And while Saturn tendencies can be expressed and perceived as harsh, try to tap into that retrograde Mercury in Cancer, and utilize the gentle firmness of the elder kindergarten teacher. Speak to yourself gently (but firmly) knowing that you are ultimately being kind to yourself by setting expectations for achievements and behaviors. Remember, there is a difference between “kind” and “nice”; can you identify an example of this in your life? Can you perhaps think of a time when you have been nice, but not kind, or vice versa? Is there something that is being illuminated at this full Moon that is showing you a way that you can be kind to yourself or others by gently setting and enforcing some expectations, boundaries, restrictions, or resolutions? Perhaps ones that may not feel “nice”, but are ultimately “kind”?
Mercury will be retrograde until July 23, before turning direct at 16°19’ Cancer at 5:57 pm. Mercury will not cross over the shadow degree of 26°15’ Cancer until August 6 at 10:37 pm. So whatever it is that this Capricorn full Moon may be shining a light on may take until that time to get to a sufficient level of acceptance or resolution. Think about it - whenever you rearrange your pantry, or your furniture, or your books, or records, it takes a little while to get used to the new arrangement. Consider this Mercury retrograde period (June 29-July 23) to be the opportune time to implement whatever needs to be revisited, revised, or rearranged, and allow the shadow period (July 23 - August 6) to be the time period for everyone to get on board with, and used to, the new arrangement. Be patient with yourself and others.
Mars moved into Gemini on June 28 at 2:29 pm, and is currently at 00°50’ Gemini, applying to conjunct Uranus in Gemini at 03°39’; this conjunction will be exact at 03°52’ Gemini on - wait for it - Saturday, July 4, at 1:07 am - our nation’s 250th birthday! Yeahhhh, that tracks fer sure.
So we know that Mars is the planet of assertion, courage, aggression, action, striving, and catalyzing. He has recently moved from the fixed Earth sign of Taurus into the mutable Air sign of Gemini, so there is a buzzy lightness to this Mars newly in Gemini. Mars is about energetic and forceful action and movement - in Taurus, we can imagine the movement of the bulldozer, persevering through obstacles slowly but surely. In Gemini, the movement is quick, light, and maybe a little scattered and all over the place. And when we add Uranus into the mix, the planet of change, rebellion, freedom, liberation, reform, revolution, the unexpected breakup of structures, and sudden surprises, revelations, and awakenings, welp, that’s a real live wire right there, folks!
Now, Mars meets up to conjoin Uranus about every two years, and the last time was July 15, 2024 at 9:04 am. Do you remember what you were up to at that time? I do, because we were just starting out on a road trip out to Colorado to meet up with my astrology classmates for our Astro U retreat. The morning that we left, my husband helped our neighbor load up her wolfhound (and our dog’s best friend) into her van to go to the vet, as he was feeling poorly. Somewhere in western Iowa, we received news that he had passed over the rainbow bridge, which was shocking and devastating for all of us. We found solace as we camped at a lovely spot in the Loess Hills, hiking and grilling with our dear friend Scott who came over from Omaha for a few days, which did so much to buoy our spirits. From there, we camped at Lake McConaughy and hiked at Ash Hollow Park, all the while texting excitedly with my Astro U classmates about our upcoming gathering.
Meanwhile, out in the world, there was an assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate, and a few days later the RNC featured folks in the audience wearing symbolic ear bandages of solidarity, as well as Hulk Hogan ripping off his shirt to reveal his MAGA shirt underneath, thereby breaking the hearts of many a Gen-Xer - yours truly included. Never meet your heroes, little hulksters.
On the last leg of our road trip to Colorado, a CrowdStrike security update caused the largest IT outage in history, which meant that some of my Astro U classmates had their flights to Colorado cancelled, which was another heartbreak for all of us.
And finally, during our retreat weekend, the Democratic presidential candidate officially withdrew from the campaign after a beyond disastrous debate performance the month before, and his running mate became the first woman of color to become a presidential candidate. So friends, there we have some examples of what the vibe of Mars meeting up with Uranus can look like - some good, some bad, and an underlying thrum of chaos beneath it all.
This Mars/Uranus conjunction will also be squaring the lunar nodes, which as we talked about at the Gemini New Moon, can indicate a willingness to shake things up in order to move forward toward your highest and best self, or toward your soul’s purpose. There may even perhaps be a willingness to let go of things, people, or situations that no longer serve your best interests or your soul’s growth. Uranus is the energy of sudden shocks, rebellion, and a-ha! moments, so whatever is being illuminated for you at this full Moon may surprise you or others, especially with regard to what you may be willing to let go of in order to move forward. With Mars there as well, you may be ready to take action on this idea, or perhaps you may be able to tap into a reserve of courage that surprises you or those around you.
Since at the full Moon we typically think of it as an excellent time to release what no longer serves us, what is being illuminated for you at this full Moon that wants to be released?
When releasing during the full Moon, I like to make it a thing. It doesn’t have to be exactly at the time of the full Moon, it can be any time in the day or night leading up to it, which is typically what I prefer, but do what you are able. If you miss the night before, do it the night of or even the day or night after, as long as the Moon still appears full in the sky, I think the symbology is there for you to work with.
Take some time and create a sacred space for yourself and whoever else would like to make it a thing with you. This doesn’t have to be elaborate. Simply sitting quietly and focusing on your breath with lightly closed eyes and spine as erect as possible, or focusing on the sounds in your environment and intentionally taking this moment to connect with yourself and with the nurturing energy of the Moon, which I like to think of as our Cosmic Mother. If you have a meditative practice, feel free to incorporate that into your full Moon practice, but let the Moon guide you, don’t get too far into your solar self of Doing, but allow yourself to simply exist in your lunar self of Being. If you like to really get into your ritual practice, please do make it as elaborate as you wish.
At the end of my full Moon practice, I like to make a list of what I’m releasing. I simply write “I release:” at the top of a piece of paper, and then I write down everything that came up during my quiet time with myself. And then I burn that mofo! Safely and mindfully into my little metal cauldron - let’s not set our selves or homes or fields alight please. It really is very freeing to watch the smoke from the burning list curl up into the ethers. Some folks like to incorporate the water element by tossing the cooled ashes into a body of water afterwards, but I’m happy to scatter them to the winds, figuring they’ll make it to water someday. COOLED ashes, mind you, ok? Like totally, 100% completely cold ashes, the next day at the earliest, but preferably even later than that. And there, just like that you have made some space for your higher Self to lead you on to your highest and best expression of yourself. I’m a big proponent of gratitude, so I like to give thanks at the end of my practice, so give thanks to whatever Deity you feel is guiding you. If you are PTSD from CCD or whatever other childhood teachings were foisted upon you, and don’t like the thought of Deities, simply give thanks to yourself for making this time to connect with yourself and give thanks to the Universe for coexisting with you.
Because as my yoga teacher Jaki Nett likes to say that everything comes back to yoga, we’ll tie this practice into yoga philosophy, wherein which one of the eight limbs of yoga are the Niyamas. The Niyamas are virtues or individual disciplines which calm the disturbed mind. One of these five Niyamas is known as Isvara Pranidhana, or “surrender to the Divine of all our actions”. In surrendering, we allow for the Divine to work its own magic, co-creating with us. If you’d like to work with the Zodiacal houses, and aren’t sure which house this Full Moon falls in your chart, feel free to reach out to me for that information.
