Taurus New Moon at Harvest Preserve
The Taurus New Moon of 2026 occurs on Saturday, May 16, at 3:01 pm CST. We’re still in that same pattern of the Sun and Moon conjunct at the later degrees of the sign, and this time the new Moon occurs at 25°57’ Taurus.
The Sun and Moon are both conjunct Mercury in Taurus at 28°41’ and all three are out of sign conjunct Uranus in Gemini at 01°10’. The Sun and Moon are also sextile to Jupiter in Cancer at 21°21’. Sounds promising so far! The ruler of this new Moon in Taurus is Venus, who is currently located at 27°21’ Gemini, and Venus is making a close sextile aspect to Mars in Aries at 28°25’. Mars is also closely conjunct Chiron in Aries at 28°24’, and therein my friends, lies the rub.
We’ve talked before about Venus and Mars being the lovers Aphrodite and Ares in Greek myth, so that means that there is some erotic energy to work with at this new Moon. Erotic in the classical sense of the word, sure, but also in the Jungian sense of the word - that being the principle of personal relatedness in human activities. Put another way, Eros can refer to the ability to create emotional bonds and to develop a connection with others and with our activities - being fully engaged with our lives. With Chiron along for the ride with Venus and Mars, there may be an opportunity to heal something along these erotic lines. What might that look like for you?
The Taurus new Moon occurs during arguably the most beautiful time of the year in the Midwest - the fresh salad greens, the asparagus, the mushrooms, the flowers, the baby animals, the weather - need I go on? I will, because in our college town, the kids are going back to their Chicago suburbs and to their rural Iowa towns and the weirdo townies get to roam downtown unperturbed once again - Glorious!
Taurus is a fixed Earth sign, concerned with fertility, simplicity, sustenance, and seeing through the bullshit. It’s about allowing things to take root, and with calm, plodding perseverance, allowing those things to grow and flourish. Which means the Taurus new Moon is one of the best new Moons to set some intentions, so please do so if you are able! Since Taurus is ruled by Venus, remember to have those intentions align with your personal values. If you’ve gone astray from your personal values, the new Moon in Taurus is the perfect time to realign yourself with your values, or to reevaluate what those personal values may be for you at this juncture.
Because the Sun and Moon are conjunct both Mercury and Uranus, this new Moon is the ideal time to utilize that Mercurial intellect and imagination to allow yourself to receive the fecund energies that are swirling around during Taurus season. Uranus is sometimes referred to the “higher octave” of Mercury, as it can coincide with things like lightning-like flashes of insight, the acceleration of thoughts and events, births and new beginnings, intellectual brilliance, creativity, originality, and sudden breakthroughs, so really do allow yourself to fully imagine into all of your ideas, and hopefully harness or tap into some of that quicksilver Uranian brilliance, insight, and freedom. Since the Sun and Moon are sextile to Jupiter in Cancer, allow yourself to really expand your vision for your life in a way that both sustains and nurtures you.
If you’re into the Tarot, it may be helpful to think along these lines with the Sun/Moon sextile to Jupiter - that there may be some 3 of Wands energy here in this new Moon. The nuanced difference is that Wands is a masculine/projective suit, and both Taurus and Cancer are feminine/receptive signs, so rather than forcefully projecting forth your big visions and ideas, simply relax a bit and allow those visions and ideas to come to you. Allow yourself to be in a receptive state to receive any visions and ideas that may easily and effortlessly flow your way.
Side note: I’ve been learning about Tarot since I took my first of many classes with Dawn Frary at Folkloracle in 2021, primarily to be able to make correlations between astrology and Tarot, and this is the VERY FIRST TIME I have done so all on my own. It’s a big accomplishment if I do say so myself.
Sometimes when we’re told to relax or to be receptive, it’s unhelpful, and the complete opposite can occur, especially if we’re already worked up. And there is a chance that we may already be worked up at this new Moon, despite all of the beautiful Venusian Taurus and Lunar Cancer energies flowing forth. Venus, the ruler of this Taurus new Moon, is sextile to Mars and Chiron, who are conjunct in Aries, which could mean that an unhealed wound that we routinely deal with is somehow being catalyzed. Mars can signify assertion, downright aggression, and even violence, and Chiron can signify that unhealed wound that we all seem to carry around with us. So it may be that some act of aggression has triggered an old wound, and this aggression can come either from within ourselves or from others in the external world. Either way, we can look at this wound reactivation as a little clue or thread to follow into our imagination, or as an opportunity to accelerate our thoughts, ideas, creativity and insight, in the hopes of allowing those imaginative visions to take root and grow with the fertility of the Taurus new Moon.
A word on aggression and violence. I recently was in a Yoga Sangha, which is a fancy way of saying I was in a Zoom meeting, discussing the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Did you know that yoga poses (Asana) are only one of the eight limbs of yoga? It’s true! Another of the eight limbs is Yama - translated as “moral injunctions”. And one of these five Yamas or moral injunctions is Ahimsa, which is typically translated as harmlessness or non-violence. Many Sutra scholars and yoga teachers consider Ahimsa to be the primary ethical value of yoga, which, duh, of course we don’t want to be violent. That’s essentially the cornerstone of many philosophies and religions, right? In theory anyway. In practice, that’s another story, amiright?
In this Sangha, we had a much more nuanced discussion around this idea of non-violence. Jennie Williford was leading the Sangha, and she was facilitating this in-depth discussion of Ahimsa, and bringing in the ideas she found in Ravi Ravindra’s work, The Wisdom of Patañjali's Yoga Sutras: A New Translation and Guide. Shaila Press, 2015. In this work, Ravindra talks of Ahimsa as the “misplaced application of energy”, and that this idea of non-violence can be further broken down into three different forms:
Non-manipulation
Non-violation
Non-interference
As somebody who has never really mastered the art of passive-aggression, I really appreciated this nuanced discussion on the many forms that violence can take. Incidentally, I only realized this fact about myself when my dear friend Tara pointed it out to me many years ago. Tara was telling a story about having recently been seated at a table at the bar with a boyfriend of one of our mutual friends. The boyfriend was having a text/phone argument with our friend, who wanted him to come home, and instead he stayed at the table, arguing with her via text/phone, and the whole table was privy to the goings-on. I was enraged and horrified for our friend, and I said, “OMG I would’ve marched down there and dragged him out of that bar by his beard!” And Tara’s response was, “Yes, but where our friend is passive-aggressive, you are aggressive-aggressive.” I seriously had never thought of it that way, and that simple statement really explained a lot of things to me about myself. I’m not proud of this fact, and in fact I’d probably rather be able to aggress on the sly, and possibly come out looking like the non-aggressor in any given situation, but alas, that has never been the case. Sigh. In my defense, you try being the youngest of 5 children raised by a former Chicago cop who was raised by Irish immigrants and see how far passive-aggressiveness gets you. Not far at all, I can tell you that.
So, this Mars-Chiron conjunction in Aries gives all of us the opportunity to explore what kind of aggressor we are, because not only do we aggress towards others, we also aggress towards ourselves, so it might be useful for us to know where the aggression is coming from, and what form it is taking. Are we violating ourselves or others? Are we interfering with ourselves or others? Are we manipulating ourselves or others? Or are we simply dragging ourselves or others out of the bar by the beard? Once we dig into the form that the aggression is taking, we can possibly learn how to work with that energy, to hopefully begin to heal that wound that we’ve been toting around for far too long. The supportive energy of this Taurus new Moon has the potential to use the information that we derive from that wound activation to imagine a beautiful new vision of our life, a life lived in alignment with our personal value system, where we also receive all of the fecund abundance that the Universe has to offer all of us. Let the seed of this beautiful new, inspired vision of life, lived in alignment with your values, where you receive the abundance that the Universe has to offer, take root at this Taurus new Moon.
