I hope that if you’re interested in exploring the current astrology with a group of inquisitive folks, with the aim of teasing out some intentions that you would like to set for yourself, you will sign up, too! It’s always more fun and meaningful In Real Life.
The Sagittarius full Moon is exact at 09°55’ on Sunday, May 31, at 3:45 am CST. This lunation is what is known as a Blue Moon, which means nothing astrologically, but is rare, in that it does mean that there are two full Moons in one calendar month - the first being the Scorpio full Moon, which occurred back on May 1st.
Who doesn’t love a full Moon in Sagittarius? Moon in Sagittarius has strong Artemis vibes, according to Arielle Guttman (Guttman, Arielle, and Kenneth Johnson. Mythic Astrology: Internalizing the Planetary Powers. Echo Point Books and Media, 2019, Page 328), and based on the folks I know with this natal placement, that tracks 100%. So, can you tap into that adventurous, outdoorsy, exploratory - let’s just say it - badass nature of Artemis at this full Moon? Don’t forget to bring the dogs along if you do so literally - Artemis is often depicted with her hunting dogs. If you’re not feeling a physical adventure, do feel free to go on an adventure in your mind and imagination - explore unknown vistas and seek meaning from a blanket in the yard or park if that works better for you under this exuberant Sagittarius full Moon. Astrology can be both a literal outward journey, and a metaphorical inward journey - your choice!
The Sun is at 09°55’ of Gemini, opposing the Moon in Sagittarius at 09°55’, and both the Sun and Moon are somewhat widely square to the lunar nodes in Pisces and Virgo at 03°45’, forming a mutable grand cross aspect pattern (the Sun square to the nodes was exact on Monday, May 25, and the Moon square to the nodes is exact on Saturday, May 30).
The Sun is also separating from a conjunction with Uranus in Gemini at 02°01’, which was exact on Friday, May 22 - have any “a-ha” moments happened for you since that time that you may still be integrating? Any ways that may have occurred to you in which you could feel more free, or more authentically or uniquely yourself? Is there something at this full Moon that you may need to release to more fully step into that more authentic or unique version of yourself that you may have been able to glimpse or feel since the 22nd?
The Sun and Moon square to the lunar nodes can echo this idea of letting go of, or not relying so much on, the tools that have outgrown their usefulness for us. These tools, or ways of being in the world, that perhaps come naturally to us may have over time morphed into baggage that we’re schlepping around with us. What once was a handy dandy multi-tool that seemed to work in any situation has now become unnecessary baggage that just doesn’t work anymore, yet we can’t seem to accept that it needs to go. It seems a betrayal that what has always worked so effortlessly in the past now falls flat, and contributes nothing but expended energy trying to make it work again. Can you think of an example of this in your own life that may have been illuminated in the past week or so?
With the South Node in Virgo and the North Node in Pisces, it may be related to releasing perfectionism and surrendering to the divine flow of energies all around us. Virgo is about discrimination, purification, grounding, and daily practice. Can you think of a way to tap into those Virgoan energies of differentiating between what is healthy vs. unhealthy, useful vs. pointless, or valuable vs. damaging in a way that is not about fastidious perfectionism, but about developing compassionate acceptance of yourself and others? Is there a way that you can come to understand that compassionate acceptance of yourself and others is healthy, useful, and valuable, and is a necessary step towards that Virgoan aim of discrimination and purification? The nodes will be moving into the Aquarius/Leo axis in July, so this full Moon seems like a last best chance to really dig into these Pisces/Virgo themes, and release what needs to be released around these ideas, to allow for this compassionate acceptance to come in. Bonus points if you’re confused - it means that you’re following along! The nodes move backwards (or retrograde) through the symbolic map of the Zodiac - leaving Pisces/Virgo, and then entering Aquarius/Leo, the preceding signs.
In this Sagittarius full Moon chart, the Sun is separating from the conjunction to Uranus, which means the outer planet small talent triangle is being activated with this lunation. Remember the outer planet small talent triangle? Sure you do! It hailed the real beginning of the Fire and Air era for society. Don’t worry, we’ll revisit the signification of that aspect pattern again and again, until it’s no longer in play. Which is gonna be a while.
So the Sun is separating from the conjunction to Uranus in Gemini, which means that the Sun is also engaging the rest of the outer planet talent triangle - separating from a sextile to Neptune at 04°02 Aries (which was exact on Sunday, May 24) and separating from a trine to Pluto in Aquarius at 05°22’ (which was exact on Tuesday, May 26). It also means that the Sun is applying to a sextile to Saturn at 12°11’ Aries (which will be exact on Tuesday, June 2nd).
I love the phrase “trust the process”, not entirely exclusively for the SNL skit with Marcello Hernandez and Heidi Gardner, but it’s a big factor. When “trust the process” is used astrologically, it can mean trust the order of the transiting planets that are being highlighted. The Sun first bumped into Uranus on May 22nd, and had a conversation that shook us out of our hum-drum routine or conditioned response or thinking in some way. Then the Sun had an opportunity to speak to Neptune on May 24th, perhaps stirring up our consciousness in a fantastical, mystical, spiritual, or intuitive way. The Sun then moved on to have a heavy but harmonious and supportive conversation with Pluto on May 26th, perhaps about power and helplessness, or creative self-empowerment. This Pluto convo may have unearthed an awareness of some hidden aspect of ourself that has been holding us back from transforming our personality in some way. And finally, the Sun will have an opportunity for a conversation with Saturn on June 2nd, the git ‘r done, organizational taskmaster of the Zodiac, where all of these awarenesses will have an opportunity to come into tangible form in some way in our lives.
Aside from these ongoing conversations of the luminaries that are still being integrated, there are other aspects afoot in this Sagittarius full Moon chart that bear mentioning.
Mars at 09°17’ Taurus is mercifully separating from the square to Pluto at 05°22’ Aquarius, which was exact on Monday, May 25. Did you feel that one? Are you still integrating that intensity? Mars is the warrior planet, and Pluto is the planet of power, so you can see how that one can go haywire, yes? In a best case scenario, Mars-Pluto is about having the courage to transform, but the square aspect isn’t the most “best case scenario” aspect out there. Even I, who consciously chooses to engage with the astrological energies in a proactive way (instead of cultivating a victim mentality by fearing or dreading the energies) must admit, I was secretly relieved when a friend cancelled her holiday weekend plans to travel to Iowa. Challenging Mars-Pluto aspects can signify the possibility for accidents, and I was happy to not worry about that possibility in this scenario. I did see that there were not one, but two accidental shootings of juveniles over the holiday weekend reported on the local news - yikes. People! If we must have both children and guns in our house, gun safes, please! You cannot expect young folks to not be mesmerized by the allure of a shiny weapon. Have you ever shot a gun? It can be thrilling and exhilarating - that is the same type of power that is inherent in a Mars-Pluto aspect. Difficult for mere mortals to take in stride, especially those with brains that are not yet fully developed.
Venus in Cancer at 14°38’ is separating from a square to Saturn in Aries at 12°11’ (exact square on Thursday, May 28). While I am typically averse to either infantilizing Venus or to demonizing Saturn, this feels like it might sting a bit. We’ve got Venus, the planet of connection, self-worth, values, and money in sensitive and protective Cancer, squaring Saturn, the planet of boundaries, rules, restrictions, and discipline in the fiery, straight-shooting sign of Aries. Some sensitivities may be exposed here; delicate, downy feathers may be ruffled. I imagine this particular aspect with Venus as a young, fresh out of college, first-year kindergarten teacher being mentored and likely bluntly corrected by Saturn, the wise elder, a 50-plus year kindergarten teacher who’s still going to work every day. Can you take whatever may be ruffling your sensitivities and view it as a precious lesson from somebody who has been there, done that? And can you release any upset, shame, or hurt that may have occurred, while still retaining the valuable lesson? Again, we are reminded that cultivating self-compassion and self-acceptance is a crucial step on the path toward discrimination.
Also, Mercury at 28°03’ Gemini is applying to sextile Chiron in Aries at 29°09’, and will be exact on the evening of the 31st, the day of the full Moon. Is it me, or does Chiron seem to be nosing his way into all of these lunation conversations? Once again, here we have yet another opportunity to bring into our conscious awareness what is being illuminated at this full Moon regarding a core wound that we may be toiling under. If you’re a bit weary from investigating that core wound, maybe we can turn our attention to one of the other archetypes that Chiron represents - that of the outsider, or the maverick. This seems to align better with the other energies present in this full Moon in Sagittarius chart. Can you bring something into your conscious awareness at this full Moon around feelings or sensations of being the outsider, or the maverick? Is there a way that you are unorthodox, or don’t do things the way that society, or family, or peers expect you to? Can you develop compassion toward and acceptance of that part of yourself? Can you release any unnecessary feelings of obligation to conform or shame or embarrassment resulting from that part of yourself at this full Moon?
As promised, let’s revisit the outer planet small talent triangle. As discussed previously, this aspect pattern suggests that we have support from the outer planets, in that they are all in dialogue with one another in a flowing aspect, rather than a clashing aspect. The aspect pattern is described by the Hubers (Huber, Bruno, et al. Aspect Pattern Astrology: A New Holistic Horoscope Interpretation Method. HopeWell, 2019. P. 140) as a “small talent triangle”, as one of a “still developing talent”, with growth achieved by adapting, and a gradual development into a “distinctive and specialized talent” over time, with knowledge and skills gained by calmly absorbing experiences into our consciousness, and not necessarily through active striving.
The outer planets will remain in this aspect pattern for several years, hopefully providing calming support for the social changes of this new Air and Fire era that we have firmly entered now that all three outer planets are in their respective Air and Fire signs for the duration. How can we as individuals calmly absorb experiences into our consciousness, with the aim of gaining knowledge and skills, while growing by remaining adaptable? This growth that we achieve by remaining adaptable may gradually develop into a distinctive or specialized talent over time. What does that look like to you? There are many years to ponder these ideas while this aspect pattern is in effect, but what is being illuminated for you at this Sagittarius full Moon that may be giving you some clues in this line of thinking?
Since at the full Moon we typically think of it as an excellent time to release what no longer serves us, what is being illuminated for you at this full Moon that wants to be released?
When releasing during the full Moon, I like to make it a thing. It doesn’t have to be exactly at the time of the full Moon, it can be any time in the day or night leading up to it, which is typically what I prefer, but do what you are able. If you miss the night before, do it the night of or even the day or night after, as long as the Moon still appears full in the sky, I think the symbology is there for you to work with. Take some time and create a sacred space for yourself and whoever else would like to make it a thing with you. This doesn’t have to be elaborate. Simply sitting quietly and focusing on your breath with lightly closed eyes and spine as erect as possible, or focusing on the sounds in your environment and intentionally taking this moment to connect with yourself and with the nurturing energy of the Moon, which I like to think of as our Cosmic Mother. If you have a meditative practice, feel free to incorporate that into your full Moon practice, but let the Moon guide you, don’t get too far into your solar self of Doing, but allow yourself to simply exist in your lunar self of Being. If you like to really get into your ritual practice, please do make it as elaborate as you wish. At the end of my full Moon practice, I like to make a list of what I’m releasing. I simply write “I release:” at the top of a piece of paper, and then I write down everything that came up during my quiet time with myself. And then I burn that mofo! Safely and mindfully into my little metal cauldron - let’s not set our selves or homes or fields alight please. It really is very freeing to watch the smoke from the burning list curl up into the ethers. Some folks like to incorporate the water element by tossing the cooled ashes into a body of water afterwards, but I’m happy to scatter them to the winds, figuring they’ll make it to water someday. COOLED ashes, mind you, ok? Like totally, 100% completely cold ashes, the next day at the earliest, but preferably even later than that. And there, just like that you have made some space for your higher Self to lead you on to your highest and best expression of yourself. I’m a big proponent of gratitude, so I like to give thanks at the end of my practice, so give thanks to whatever Deity you feel is guiding you. If you are PTSD from CCD or whatever other childhood teachings were foisted upon you, and don’t like the thought of Deities, simply give thanks to yourself for making this time to connect with yourself and give thanks to the Universe for coexisting with you.
Because as my yoga teacher Jaki Nett likes to say that everything comes back to yoga, we’ll tie this practice into yoga philosophy, wherein which one of the eight limbs of yoga are the Niyamas. The Niyamas are virtues or individual disciplines which calm the disturbed mind. One of these five Niyamas is known as Isvara Pranidhana, or “surrender to the Divine of all our actions”. In surrendering, we allow for the Divine to work its own magic, co-creating with us. If you’d like to work with the Zodiacal houses, and aren’t sure which house this Full Moon falls in your chart, feel free to reach out to me for that information.
