Summer Solstice 2026

The Summer Solstice 2026 begins on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 3:24 am CST. In Western Tropical Astrology, Cancer season begins at the Summer Solstice, when the Sun has climbed up to its northernmost position at the Tropic of Cancer - have you ever noticed the Sun coming in the window in a more northerly direction around the Summer Solstice? Well, you will now. The Sun appears to stand still around the Solstice, and it is therefore a good time for us to also pause our activities for reflection, to enter a state of “being” as opposed to “doing”. Paul F. Newman’s book (Title: Declination in Astrology: The Steps of the Sun Publisher: Wessex Astrologer Limited Published year: 2006 Author:Paul F. Newman, page 40) contains some really great information about the Solar Festivals, and in it, he says that the actual days of Solstice were historically likely times to go inward and connect with the Divine, with the raucous celebrations occurring in the days following. He also says that the Solstice is a time to light a candle, but not a fire. Good to know, but when it comes to making and holding sacred space for yourself and others, I say trust your inner knowing and do what feels right for you and yours.

The astrology of this year’s Summer Solstice seems to have a theme of opportunity and flow, and I say that because there are quite a few sextile (opportunity) and trine (flow) aspects occurring in this year’s Summer Solstice chart:

  • Sun at 00°00’ Cancer sextile Chiron at 00°03’ Taurus:

Chiron moved into Taurus on June 19, and will stay there until he retrogrades back to Aries on September 17, 2026. Chiron will then be in Aries until April 14, 2027, when he moves forward again into Taurus for the duration. So we could say that the next three months will be a good opportunity to see how we may begin to heal the Taurus areas of our lives, or perhaps how we can start to put ourselves in a position of mentorship in the Taurus areas of our lives. Taurus is a fixed Earth sign, ruled by Venus, that loves to stand on solid ground. There is an appreciation of nature with Taurus, one that is concerned with preservation and building something tangible through determined persistence and perseverance. Maybe the next three months could turn our collective attention to all of nature and Mother Earth herself, where there are more than enough opportunities to heal what ails us.

  • Sun at 00°00’ Cancer trine the North Node in Pisces at 01°55’ Pisces and sextile South Node at 01°55’Virgo AND Chiron at 00°03 Taurus sextile the North Node in Pisces at 01°55’ and trine South Node at 01°55’Virgo:

I love this configuration, because it seems to suggest that the way to healing may be to embrace creativity and to release perfectionism. Perhaps by grounding ourselves in some type of daily practice, we may start to be able to discern what is healthy, useful, and valuable in our lives, and what isn’t. Once we get a handle on this, we may organically develop a more compassionate understanding and acceptance of ourselves and others, which may in turn increase our ability to discriminate between what is life-enhancing and what isn’t. In this process, we may be able to simplify our ability to surrender to the divine flow of creativity, perhaps allowing for us to more easily step into that creative flow in our daily lives.

  • Moon (which rules Cancer) at 23°16’ Virgo sextile Mercury at 23°36’ Cancer and Jupiter at 28°07’ Cancer:

A beautiful opportunity to engage in that nurturing self-talk we touched on at the Gemini New Moon, with Jupiter now there to expand our perception and intuition, and perhaps helping to integrate that nurturing self-talk to a deeper level of awareness or meaning. Jupiter can also help with our trust and confidence in ourselves and in life, and with the sextile to a Virgo Moon, we may have the opportunity to discern which of our perceptions and communications are useful for building healthy confidence, and for trusting both ourselves and life’s divine unfolding.

  • Moon at 23°16’ Virgo trine Mars at 24°38’ Taurus:

Here we have the Taurus energy again - with warrior Mars, planet of action, in Taurus. Perhaps this flowing aspect can allow for us to sustain and nurture ourselves and each other through our courageous protection of nature and the Earth? I mean, the Moon was essentially borne from the Earth after all, as Hakeem Oluseyi (Oluseyi, Hakeem. Why Do We Exist? The Nine Realms of Universe that Make You Possible. Random House Publishing Group, 2026, Page 52) and other scientists have posited. As Dr. Olish says, about 4.5 billion years ago, a protoplanet named Theia collided with proto-Earth and parts of Theia’s core and mantle merged with Earth’s core and mantle; a portion of the debris that was ejected into orbit as a result of the collision eventually coalesced to form the Moon.

  • Mercury at 23°36’ Cancer and Jupiter at 28°07’ Cancer sextile Mars at 24°38’ Taurus:

With the Mars sextile, we may act on an opportunity to courageously embody confidence in ourselves and in life, understanding that at the edge of vulnerability is where growth often occurs. Our perceptions and our communications can help us to be open to grace and to trust in life’s divine unfolding, and possibly to derive meaning from our experiences, challenging though they may be.

  • Venus at 09°09’ Leo trine Saturn at 13°42’ Aries:

Venus is now beginning to move away from her intense and complex conversation with the outer planets, and is now applying to trine Saturn. Are there any take-aways from that outer planet conversation that you can now look to put into some tangible form in your personal relationships or in your creative pursuits? Are there some boundaries that need to be created and enforced in order to make that a reality?

Along with all of these flowing opportunities, we do have a few tense aspects to contend with at the Summer Solstice, some of which we discussed at the Gemini New Moon, which include:

  • Sun at 00°00’ Cancer square Neptune at 04°20’ Aries:

The square from Cancer to Aries can pertain to the challenge of making an emerging self, and it is a call to action. It can pertain to how to become a separate person from your family, and how to establish security through action. The energy can be clashing or unstable, and often calls for dynamism in the self. With the square to Neptune, this can be confusing or could also be nebulous - the Sun wants autonomy and self-unfoldment, but Neptune prefers compassionate sensitivity and transcendent unity, the merging of the self with others, the idea of “ALL ONE” -

 like Dr. Bronner’s soap.

  • Moon at 23°16’ Virgo applying to square Sun at 00°00’ Cancer - exact at 4:56 pm on the 21st:

Here we have the opening square indicating a time of “crisis in action” that Dane Rudhyar says requires definite acts of self-assertion sufficient to break away from obsolete past conditioning. If you made New Moon intentions, can you relate this idea back to your intentions? Is there some way that you are being called to assert yourself and break away from your past conditioning to grow into a more appropriate expression of yourself? While the square is a tense aspect, it is also the aspect of Becoming - in the plant cycle it coincides with when the plant is struggling to push itself above the ground.

  • Venus at 09°09’ Leo separating from her opposition to Pluto at 05°03’ Aquarius:

Venus opposing Pluto can bring up issues around power, intensity, drama, or obsession in our creative pursuits or personal relationships. If we remember, at the Gemini new Moon, Venus was more closely applying to sextile Uranus in Gemini first, then applying to trine Neptune in Aries second before the opposition to Pluto third, so can you reflect back and see if there was an opportunity to think outside the box with regard to your creative pursuits or personal relationships at that time? Was there nebulous, foggy confusion in these areas, or were you somehow drawn to a fantastical ideal in these areas? If so, can you take whatever came up along those lines and apply it somehow to the possible intensity of the Pluto opposition, which could very well wind up being transformative? Not gonna lie, it’s probably gonna be a little uncomfortable before we see any real signs of transformation. Remember the Goo! Don’t fear the Goo. The Goo is a necessary step in the process.

  • Uranus at 03°12’ Gemini square the lunar nodes at 01°55’ Pisces (NN) and 01°55’ Virgo (SN):

This can indicate a willingness to shake things up in order to move forward toward your highest and best self, or toward your soul’s purpose. There may even perhaps be a willingness to let go of things, people, or situations that no longer serve your best interests or your soul’s growth. Uranus is the energy of sudden shocks, rebellion, and a-ha! moments, so you may surprise yourself or others with what you’re willing to let go of in order to move forward.

Happy Solstice, friends! I hope you are able to spend some time in reflection and some time in joyous celebration at this Summer Solstice.
